Falling asleep in their own basket
Comfort and peace for our best friends
We would love nothing more than to keep our companion with us forever. Many owners hope that an animal will eventually fall asleep peacefully in its basket on its own. Unfortunately, we see that this rarely happens without prior suffering. This means that there comes a moment when we want to prevent suffering and, out of love for the animal, decide that euthanasia is the best choice. When this moment arrives, we want this farewell to be as beautiful and peaceful as possible. In a quiet, familiar environment, with the family present and a veterinarian who can take all the time needed. In other words, falling asleep in their own basket.
From my experience as a veterinarian, but also from the euthanasia and loss of my own pets, I know how valuable it is to perform euthanasia at home. Saying goodbye is never easy, but being able to do so in peace without waiting rooms, barking dogs, and stress for your animal during transport or stay at the clinic allows you to focus on the only thing that matters at that moment: a loving and warm farewell.

About me
Dr. Cindy Reijne
My name is Cindy Reijne, and I have been working as a companion animal veterinarian specializing in internal medicine, ultrasound, and dentistry for thirteen years now. It is a fantastic profession in which I can help pets and their owners every day.
In 2025, my Golden Retriever Vino suddenly became seriously ill at the age of ten. It soon became clear that he had an aggressive tumor and that we could no longer save him. We decided to let him pass away peacefully at home, in his own basket in the garden. Surrounded by our family, with cuddles, kisses, and his head on my husband's lap, he fell asleep peacefully.
The loss is great, but the loving farewell gave us much comfort. That experience made me realize how precious it is when an animal can say goodbye in its own familiar surroundings. I wish this for all pets and their owners. It was from this thought that 'Inslapen in eigen mand' (Sleeping in one's own basket) came into being.

Why choose to fall asleep in their own basket?

Familiar surroundings
As little stress as possible for you and your animal, you do not have to wait in a crowded waiting room, and you do not have to transport your animal to a clinic.

All the time
Prior to the appointment, I will always be in contact to assess whether euthanasia is the best option and to answer all questions calmly. During a home visit, I take all the time necessary for a peaceful and dignified farewell.

A loving, tailored farewell.
There are various ways to anesthetize an animal. In consultation with you, I will decide which method is best suited for your animal. In the garden or on your lap, I adapt to make a difficult situation as comfortable as possible. And at a time that suits you, such as an evening or weekend.
